What does 1:1 mean for CCHS?

In our 1:1 environment, all full-time students enrolled in grades 9-12 at CCHS will have an Apple laptop for use in school and at home.


  • What device will be used?

    The standard device for already owned devices is an Apple 11” MacBook Air.  

  • Why was the Apple laptop selected?

    We want our teachers to be able to focus on teaching and learning in the classroom and not on supporting multiple platforms.  Most of our teachers have minimal experience with PC’s as we have been using Mac’s for many years.  In addition, many of our teachers assign multimedia projects, and the iLife suite is an excellent set of tools for this type of work.  While there are also good PC applications available, it is difficult for students to collaborate with one another if they’re using different tools.

Borrowing a device from CCHS

  • What models will the borrowed laptops be?

    The borrowed laptops will be 11″ MacBook Airs.

  • When will the Distribution of Borrowed laptops happen?

    All students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

  • My student wants to take a course over the summer or needs to write their College Essay. Can they keep their laptop for the summer?

    No.  The Borrow program is only designed for students to use the laptops during the school year.  We need them over the summer to refresh and repair them.

  • What happens if the borrowed laptop, protective case, and charger are lost, damaged, or become non-functional?

    Laptops that are borrowed by students are treated like any other item provided for the advancement of their education.  There is no charge if the item is returned at the end of the year undamaged and in the same condition as lent out.  Just like a lost or damaged textbook, your student will be charged the repair or replacement cost of any device damaged or lost due to negligence or intentional damage, including power cord .(examples:  lost item, cracked screen, liquid spill). If the issue is caused by hardware failure normally covered under the AppleCare warranty, the device will be repaired or replaced without charge.

  • My student damaged a laptop and the quote to repair is expensive. Can I take it somewhere and get it repaired for cheaper?

    We require any repair be done at the direction of the CCHS IT Department with an Apple Certified Repair Service using Apple Certified Parts.  We do work with a vendor who will assess the damage and repair only those items that are damaged.  Apple often assesses the symptom and gives a ‘Worst Case’ scenario quote for repair without identifying the actual damage.

  • My student lost or broke their charger. Can I buy a non-Apple replacement to turn in?

    Unfortunately, no.  There is a significant quality discrepancy between chargers manufactured by Apple and other suppliers.   You are more than welcome to purchase a non-Apple charger for your student’s use, but we need either an Apple certified charger or the replacement cost of one ($79) if something happened to the charger originally given to your student. (Accepting a non-Apple charger is similar to someone borrowing an Audi from you and returning a Volkswagen in its place!)

Bringing your Own Device

  • What are the requirements if my student wants to bring his/her own Apple laptop?


    The standard device is an 11” MacBook Air.  Note any current base model MacBook Air, MacBook, or MacBook Pro will more than meet these specifications if purchased new at the Apple Store.  (Note:  Apple now sells 12″ or 13″ screens only.  If your family has already procured an 11″ model, they work perfectly!)

    Minimum Specifications:   11″ MacBook Air (or other model) with:

    • 1.6 GHz i5 processor
    • 2 GB RAM (4GB recommended)
    • 128 GB 240 flash storage
    • Intel HD Graphics 5000
    • WiFi 802.11n or better

    We recommend the 3 Year AppleCare Warranty covering hardware failure.

    Operating System and Required Software

    Operating System

    Highly Recommended Operating System:   OSX 10.13  High Sierra.  This Operating System will be used by all borrowed and newly leased laptops as well as all desktop computers at CCHS.  Students who bring their own device and who are using the same operating system benefit from the cohesive peer, teacher, and IT support.

    If your student’s laptop is using OSX 10.7 (Lion) or higher, upgrading to OS X 10.13 is free through the App Store.  Not sure what Operating System your owned computer is using?  Click Apple>About this Mac to check!

    Any new computer purchased after October 2017 will already have OS X 10.13 High Sierra installed.

    Required Software Installations/Updates

    The following programs should be installed/updated for programs to run smoothly at CCHS:

    • Browsers:  Chrome, Firefox, and Safari
    • Java (for Science Applets through PHET)
    • Adobe Flash (Proper viewing of videos at many websites)
    • Any additional programs or accounts as required by CCHS IT

  • What software is required on the Laptop?

    All Apple laptops that are in the hands of students (whether borrowed, leased, or owned) will need to have the following applications installed:

  • Can students and families buy a MacBook Air now if they want?

    They can!  Any purchased Apple laptop must meet or exceed the specifications for an 11” MacBook Air.

  • Is the Apple Education discount available to families?

    Apple’s published position on discounts for students is as follows:

    Education pricing is available to college students, students accepted to college, parents buying for college students, faculty, homeschool teachers, and staff at all grade levels.

    Based on this information, parents going directly to the Apple store to purchase a device for their high school student would not qualify for the Apple Education Discount.  However, we have heard from many parents that they have been given the discount when purchasing a device. Give the name of the school (Concord-Carlisle High School) to the Apple salesperson, and they will likely give you the discount.

  • I think I want to buy a laptop for my child. Where can I get more information on the different Apple laptops?

  • Is a Chromebook acceptable?

    Chromebooks are not part of the CCHS 1:1 Initiative.  If you already have a Chromebook and don’t want to purchase a laptop, you should select Borrow a laptop from CCHS.

  • Is an iPad acceptable?

    iPads are not part of the CCHS 1:1 Initiative.  If you already have an iPad and don’t want to purchase a laptop, you should select Borrow a laptop from CCHS.


  • How does the network work at the CCHS?

    ConcordSchoolNet is a powerful, fast network available to students,  faculty, and visitors at CCHS.  This network provides consistent connectivity for students anywhere in CCHS.

  • Many students need hard copies for writing and underlining. Will we have provisions for students who don’t learn well from a screen?

    Teachers will use hard copies of materials when appropriate and when requested by students.

  • What if my student’s computer is having problems?

    Any student (borrowing a computer or bringing their own computer) with technical issues is welcome to bring their device to the Learning Commons Student Help Desk during any lunch block, or before or after school to Room 245. We are limited in what we can do to help students bringing their own device.

    In case of emergency, any student can come to Room 245 at any time for help.  The IT team will do our best to resolve the issue in a timely manner.  In the event of a hardware problem, students bringing their own device may have to seek hardware support directly from Apple.

  • What if my student’s computer does not work at all, or has serious issues that will take time to resolve?

    Any student  (borrowing a computer or bringing their own computer)  can borrow a laptop from IT/Learning Commons.  This will provide time to have the device repaired or can be used as a replacement laptop.  For students who lease or bring their own laptop, we ask that students and parents sign the Laptop Loan Agreement prior to receiving a borrowed laptop.

  • What should my student do if their laptop needs to be charged during the day?

    Whether bringing their own laptop, Leasing to Own, or Borrowing, each student has received a charger.  We do not have extra chargers to supply to students during the day.  Newer models will likely hold a charge for the school day.  Batteries have a life cycle, and it is normal as devices age for batteries to need more frequent charging.  We recommend your student bring their fully charged device with their charger every day.  We also recommend students place a name tag on the charger.  They are often forgotten around the building, and this helps us identify who the charger belongs to.  (They are expensive to replace at $79.00.)
