Freshman English

4756974058_87a14dfef1_zThis course is a thematic study based on self-discovery.  During the first semester, students will explore the idea of good versus evil in the search for the self; during the second semester, they will explore the journey to self-discovery.  While the course is organized around a theme, students will read various genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama).  Throughout the year, students will be encouraged to share their ideas and to develop their own insights in more depth by discussing, writing, and completing activities and projects.  The writing assignments will include in-class short literary analyses (1-3 paragraphs), take-home short literary analyses, creative or personal pieces, and analytical essays (4+ paragraphs). Also, students will be asked to prepare and present research and multimedia projects. Vocabulary study will include both literary terms necessary to write about and discuss literature, as well as words from the texts we are studying.   Grammar skills will be reinforced through study and practice.
