This is a writing course with an emphasis on persuasive writing, on the thinking behind the writing, and on the choices made during the writing process.  Students should be prepared to write frequently, to share their writing with other students, and to offer and accept criticism graciously.   We will spend minimal time reviewing writing mechanics, but that will not be the major emphasis of the course, as it is expected that most students are competent in this area already.   Writing assignments, prepared and impromptu, will be varied and include persuasive, analytical, and personal essays as well as reviews and other evaluative essays.   We will also be reading a wide variety of nonfiction essays and articles to serve as models and inspiration.   In the spring, we will practice the art of oral presentation.
